Date night in the summer time can be difficult for us--we live in Phoenix, as you all can imagine it becomes unbearably hot outside and to the point where you don't want to leave the house to do anything. For me and Adam, we like to spend time together as much as we can indoors during the summer--and that includes date night! For our date night, we wanted to create some patriotic home decor for the upcoming holidays this summer--Memorial Day and Independence Day.

I couldn't resist--I had to sneak an unsuspecting selfie in the car when Adam drove us to the craft store. Hehe! |
One of our favorite things to do when we want to wind down and just talk and spent time together is to paint. It varies on what we paint--in the past we've painted a spectrum of things varying from Doctor Who scenes onto canvas, to something as simple as painting wood we bought from our local craft store. And that's just what we did for our date night this past week--which was one of the hottest days of the year so far! At the start of our date, we headed into town to buy some supplies at our local craft store to bring home.
The supplies we used were: wooden letters for our initials, 2 brushes, 1 sandpaper brush, and red white and blue chalk paint. After we got our painting date night supplies, we headed down to Walmart to buy our date night dinner: CALIFORNIA PIZZA KITCHEN® Hand Tossed Oven Ready Pizza - The Works!
The first thing we did for our patriotic letters was paint everything in multiple coats of white chalk paint. We let it sit and dry in-between coats--and then returned to continue to paint more white layers, until the letters were fully covered.
After the white layer(s) were dry, we went back and painted the "A" and the "C." I painted Adam's "A" for him in red, and he painted my "C" for me in blue--the reason we chose red and blue chalk paints is because we wanted to create some home decor for the patriotic summer holidays coming up.
And then of course in-between painting the colored layers, there were a few smooches and silly selfies!
If you follow us on social media, you already know Adam and I always take the most ridiculous selfies!
Once the layers were all dry, Adam and I went back over them with sandpaper to give them that distressed look we like. We took turns with this step, since sanding is a lot of work!
But our efforts were totally worth it, and we love our patriotic wooden letters decor! We put the letters away to keep in storage, and they will stay there until I pull out all of my fourth of July decor in a few weeks. Once everything was put back to its rightful place, we devoured our CALIFORNIA PIZZA KITCHEN® Hand Tossed Oven Ready Pizza - The Works. It was so easy to make, and was very affordable to buy (which is perfect for me, since that means I have more money to buy more craft supplies for future date nights!)
If there is anything Adam and I have learned about date night in the four years (almost four--anniversary is coming up!) we've been married, it's that date night does not have to be fancy or cost a lot of money to be fun or memorable. When it all boils down to it, what is important is that we make time to create new memories together!
This certainly won't be the last painting-related date night we have this summer, and I'm sure there will be a lot more silly selfies and pizza in our near future as well!
Do you have "date night" at home? What do you usually do?
What a cute idea for summer! And we love pizza so we'll have to give that CPK one a try!
ReplyDeleteThank you! And yes, this CPK pizza is awesome!
DeleteWe LOVE CPK! I live in Phoenix also and you are right going out in the summer is the surface of the sun. We usually go out on date night and see a movie (yeah thrilling I know), but there are nights we go get a pizza and stay in!
ReplyDeleteTotally! I hear you! And we love CPK too!
DeleteI agree that date night does not have to be fancy or expensive. My husband and I like to rent a movie and order take out. Your patriotic wooden letters looks great. Thanks! #client
ReplyDeleteSometimes those are truly the best kind of date nights--sitting in to cuddle up and watch a movie sounds like a great night to me!
DeleteWhat a fun date night! Great craft! (PS- I live in Phoenix too and dreading the coming heat!)
ReplyDeleteThank you! And yes, I am anxious for summer as well haha
DeleteThose letters look fab and I'm always down for frozen pizza nights... can't go wrong there!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteYour letters turned out so cute! And that pizza looks super yummy too!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteThis is so cute! Making that vintage-looking style of painted things always looked so hard for a novice like me. This post is making me inspired to do it!
ReplyDeleteThey really are easy--I recommend starting out with the letters, and once you feel comfortable with the technique then bigger pieces like furniture will become feasible too!
DeleteWe have sort of date nights. Every couple of weeks on a Saturday, we will order out dinner after the kids go to bed, make a big bowl of popcorn and play a game (trivial pursuit or something like that).
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a fun tradition!
DeleteWe have a date night at home on a regular basis as we don't always have a sitter. WE usually have a pizza or some take out
ReplyDeleteTotally! Glad you make time to have date night just the same!
DeleteYou have way too much fun on your date nights, love it! Honestly, date night is a rarity around here, we need to make a point to have one soon. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteHaha thank you. Hopefully you can make some time to have a date night of your own :)
DeleteLooks like the two of you had a really good time. The letters are very sweet.
ReplyDeleteps: I don't know if it's my browser or what but your font is teeny tiny and very hard to read for people with poorer vision. I just want to let you know. I don't want to sound obnoxious...
The hubby and I don't really have date nights specifically. After 33 years of marriage every night is a date or no night is a date.
DeleteThank you for letting me know about the font. May I ask, what browser do you use? I will look into that.
DeleteWe don't really have date night, but we do love to tackle dinners together and home projects. It is hard because he works so far away, that during the week we don't see each other :(
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome that you two tackle home projects and dinners together!
DeleteI have always wanted to try CPK, but since I am gluten free I never have. BUT, I just heard they are coming out with a new GF version, so I am thrilled to try it. I love how you and your husband are always having so much fun together.
ReplyDeleteThat would be great if they are coming out with gluten-free. I know a lot of people with food allergies. And thanks!
DeleteA fun & simple date night is just what any couple needs. And pizza for any meal is always a good idea!
ReplyDeleteTotally!
DeleteWe don't get to do date night very often with 3 kids but I love it when do fun things together.
ReplyDeleteI hear you! Hopefully you two can have some time alone soon!
DeleteLooks like a cute date night!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It was :)
DeleteOmg its really great idea. I am surely gonna steal this idea... xxx
ReplyDeleteIt's all yours! Sharing is caring :D hehe
DeleteThis is so cute! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteVery cute idea! Our date night at home is my favorite chicken wrap from Buffalo Wild Wings, his favorite sushi from a local place here and Game of Thrones while both kids sleep!
ReplyDeleteOh fun!!! I love that you two have your own favorite foods and watch tv together--sounds like a great date night at home for sure!
DeleteThis sounds like a lot of fun. Thanks for the idea!! We're on a limited income, so trying to find new date night ideas really sucks sometimes, without having to go somewhere. Love this!
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean--date night can be hard to swing on limited income, and this sort of date would definitely be affordable for most people (especially if you already have paints and brushes!)
DeleteI love this fund date night idea, but I am afraid that my finace and I aren't the craftest couple ;) I love CPK pizzas but never thought of trying them at home!!
ReplyDeleteCPK pizza at home is the best!! It's our favorite for sure :)
DeleteWhat a cool date night! I am sure it will be fun to remember when you bring out your newly painted decorations!
ReplyDeleteYes!! And we're actually putting them in the window sill for Memorial Day this weekend :D
DeleteWhat fun idea!! Not sure I could get my husband painting on a date night, but pizza for sure!
ReplyDeleteMost guys like pizza, that is for sure!
DeleteWhat great timing. My husband and I were just looking for great date night ideas that wouldn't break the bank. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou are most welcome!
