Cinnamon Bun Skillet Bake

Happy Wednesday! We're halfway through the first week of the year, and I am feeling like 2016 is going to be a fabulous year! My new year resolutions were all blog-related, and I spent time over the weekend drafting out how I wanted to achieve my goals and I am feeling really confident that it will be a successful year. I took a small break over the weekend of planning to make this Cinnamon Bun Skillet Bake, though!

Earlier this week, Adam and I enjoyed these fluffy and soft cinnamon buns we baked right in the skillet--this skillet dessert is so sweet and incredibly easy to make. Move over, Cinnabon! This recipe is so dang good!

Cinnamon Bun Skillet Bake

Cinnamon Spread Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 stick of butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of whole milk

Dough Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups of self-rising flour (all-purpose substitute is OK)
  • 1/2 cup of hot water
  • 1 tablespoon of dry (active) yeast
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar

Cream Cheese Icing Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of regular cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

  1. In a medium bowl, mix brown sugar with flour, melted butter, ground cinnamon, and whole milk. Use a fork to mix the ingredients together until the consistency is the same throughout the mix. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour with yeast and hot water. Mix well.
  3. Pour in unsalted butter, salt, and sugar and beat mixture until the dough forms and sticks together in a ball-like shape.
  4. Cover the dough and set aside for 15 minutes.
  5. Coat a clean and dry surface with a small layer of flour. Place dough onto the surface and begin working the dough and folding it back onto itself. Then, use a rolling pin lightly covered with flour to roll dough out.
  6. Pre-heat your oven to 375 degrees (F).
  7. Pour your cinnamon sugar mixture on top of the dough and spread it around evenly.
  8. Roll the cinnamon sugar dough into a large long roll. Cut the length of the dough into about 6 pieces (these will be your cinnamon bun sections in your skillet).
  9. Lay the cinnamon buns into the skillet mixture side up, and fill the skillet.
  10. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes, or until the cinnamon buns have spread and started to brown.
  11. While cinnamon bun skillet is baking, prepare your icing in a medium bowl. Combine cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Mix until you reach your desired texture (I prefer mine a little thick, so I always end up adding about another tablespoon or so of powdered sugar).
  12. Remove cinnamon bun skillet from the oven.
  13. Pour cream cheese icing over hot cinnamon bun skillet. Serve and enjoy!

What are some of your favorite skillet desserts?

  1. I love that you made these in a skillet--must try them!

  2. This sounds AMAZING! That drizzle over the side is killing me.

    1. I know, right?! When I was filming and drizzle went to the side I was silently cheering behind the camera haha

  3. These look so incredible! I wish I had one in hand right now! :)

    1. Thanks, Bethany! I'd totally hand you one if I could!!
