"Day by the Pool" Pull Through Braid with Side Bun Hair Tutorial

This past weekend was well into the three temperature digits--in fact, I even did a Snapchat showing that it hit 100 degrees in Phoenix to prove it to some of my out-of-state friends! I was very busy all weekend long with work, so as much as I wanted to try to take my first dip into the pool for the year I was unable to go for a swim. My dream weekend of hanging out by the pool will be in my near future, though!

Adam and I spent the majority of our time off last summer hanging around outside and cooling off in the pool, and then we'd sit poolside in the shade and enjoy some cocktails for happy hour. This summer is sure to be filled with plenty of weekends like that, and unlike last year, I have promised myself to take better care of my hair during the summer months.

Chlorine takes such a toll on my hair. It gets stringy, soaks up the chemicals, and leaves lots of residue in my hair even after shampooing it multiple times. As much as taking a dip and getting my head wet does feel great when it's ridiculously hot outside, I have made it a plan to wear my hair up before I hit the pool for the day. Today, I'm sharing a day by the pool hairstyle tutorial featuring a pull through braid with a side bun of curls! This braided updo keeps my hair from getting wet while I spend my morning in the pool, and it looks cute even after I'm done going for a swim and I'm ready to sit poolside to enjoy some drinks with friends!

Day by the Pool Hairstyle Tutorial

Step 1: Start with one small ponytail on the side of your hair. Use miniature hair bands.

Step 2: Clip back the ponytail end using a hair clip.

Step 3: With the hair still clipped back, create a new ponytail underneath it.

Step 4: Separate the old ponytail into two sections.

Step 5: Drape each side of the separated ponytail over the new ponytail. Lift the new ponytail.

Step 6: Clip back the newer ponytail (similar method as step 2).

Steps 7 and 8: Repeat the same process of creating a new ponytail underneath the older ones, and separate the hair into two pieces and drape it over each side of the new ponytail. Clip the new ponytail back and continue creating new ponytails (that start to become a braid) with the same method.

Steps 9 and 10: Continue the same process (see images below for guidance).

Step 11 and 12: Continue the same process again until you reach the back of your neck. Create a ponytail at the back of your neck and continue the process for one or two more braided sections.

Step 13: Pull the braids through to thicken. This gives the illusion of having a thicker braid (and thicker hair).

Step 14: Pull and thicken all of the braided sections.

Step 15: Curl the end of your hair (if desired).

Step 16: Pin the (curled) hair up into a low side bun. Complete the look with finishing spray to control flyaways.

Isn't this braided side bun adorable?! I really love it! I think it would be a cute look for a wedding, too. This hairstyle is perfect for spending a day at the pool, though--it keeps my hair up and out of the water, and it's stylish enough that I don't feel like I have awkward pool hair when I sit poolside for happy hour drinks!

Garnier Whole Blends Hydrating Hair Care with Coconut Water and Vanilla Milk Extracts (shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask) is a must-have for your spring and summer season! The Whole Blends Hydrating Hair Care formula hydrates and softens dehydrated hair, which is great for the summer since my hair always gets thirsty and needs a boost of hydration. Plus, the smell of coconut mixed with vanilla is such a summer scent (reminds me of the piña colada drinks I like to enjoy while I'm sitting by the pool!)

For those of you who feel like your hair needs some extra care on top of just shampooing and conditioning it, be sure to lookout for the Whole Blends Hydrating Hair Care in their hydrating hair mask! I got all of the products I needed for today's tutorial at my local Walmart in the beauty section.
