All week long I have been preparing for this football, bread bowl chili

Our sourdough chili bowl is perfect to make for our football tailgate parties! It's packed with everything we love about game day comfort food--bread, cheese, meat, and some seriously spicy heat. Adam and I are no strangers to making chili, too. We're constantly trying to find the best way to make chili we can enjoy before watching the football game, and lately, we have been loving this game day sourdough chili bowl recipe.

Game Day Sourdough Chili Bowl
*yields about 12 servings of chili

Ingredients:
  • 1 cups of chili powder
  • 1/4 cup of crushed red pepper
  • 1 cup of chopped green onion
  • 1 cup of minced garlic
  • 1 3/4 cups of chili beans
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 4-5 jalapeño peppers, chopped
  • 1/4 lb of Colby Jack cheese
  • 1/4 lb of jalapeño and cayenne cheddar cheese
  • 2 1/2 lbs of cooked, lean hamburger meat
  • 2 3/4 cups of diced tomatoes
  • Multiple, round sourdough bread loaves
Directions:
  1. Chop up/cook/prepare all of the chili ingredients except for the cheese and bread. This includes cooking hamburger meat and chopping up/sorting all of the onions, peppers, etc.
  2. Heat a large, stovetop chili pot to low-medium heat and combine all of the ingredients except for the cheeses and bread.
  3. Cover and heat the chili and allow it to simmer on low heat for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. With about 30 minutes remaining until you serve your chili, grate your cheese into the pot and cover again. Wait 20-30 minutes and then prepare to serve the chili.
  5. Using the top of a mason jar as a guide, cut a circular hole in the center of the sourdough bread loaves. Hollow out each bread loaf and then fill them with chili. You can top them off with extra cheese, sour cream, and even green onions if you'd like. Serve and enjoy!

Aside from my day off this week, I've been prepping for our tailgate all week long! Getting ready for tailgreatness takes a lot of work!

After I came back from my press trip in New Mexico last week, I began cleaning the entire apartment and getting everything ready to have people over for the game this weekend. Once my cleaning checklist was complete, I took a bike ride down to our local Walmart and picked up all of our tailgating party supplies, including everything we needed to make our game day sourdough chili bowls and some much-needed Nexium® 24HR Capsules 42ct.

Football season means preparing for heartburn in our house--Adam is basically in complete denial, and he believes he can handle as much spicy food as he wants with little to no consequences. Every time before we make chili he reminds me, "Cath, I'll be fine!" But I always make sure to add Nexium® 24HR to my shopping list.

For some reason I have yet to understand (we've been married and living together for over 5 years now), even with all of the debate on whether or not he will need it, he always seems to silently grab a cup of water and take the Nexium® 24HR** when I bring it home anyway. Obviously he's found some comfort in taking it before a tailgate, otherwise, I would imagine there would be more debate on why I bought it and brought it home for him. So that's why I always suggest keeping Nexium® 24HR Capsules 42ct around before game day--because even (the most loveable yet stubborn) husbands who suffer from frequent heartburn will reach for it.

**Get all-day, all-night protection from frequent heartburn with Nexium® 24HR. Nexium® 24HR is the #1 Choice of Doctors and Pharmacists (among PCPs and Pharmacists who use a branded OTC PPI) for their own frequent heartburn.

  1. Oh my goodness- this looks incredible. I have been thinking about making a bread bowl of SOME sort and this looks like it's what I need.

I think I need Nexium because... well, I USED to be in denial like Adam but... haha, my body is hating me and paying me back with serious heartburn. Ha.

    1. It's definitely a fun way to serve it and is great when you get everyone all sat down at the dinner table, and the table looks so inviting with a large bread bowl filled with chili at everyone's place setting!
