10 Tips on How to Stay Cool while Indoors

The Arizona desert heat has arrived, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. 

Next week, the temperatures are climbing through the triple digits and the week is supposed to end with a 117 degrees (F) day! That kind of heat is just beyond bearable, and when the weather gets that hot there's only one thing to do--head inside. After living in Arizona for almost 10 years, I've learned a thing or two about keeping the heat outside and staying comfortable and cool inside my home.

There are plenty of ways to beat the heat while staying indoors, and today I am sharing 10 tips on how to stay cool even on the hottest days of summer. 

#1 Wear Breathable Clothing

Wearing breathable, loose fitting clothing can keep the heat away. As adorable as those fuzzy socks are, stray from wearing any excess clothing that could make you warmer than necessary. Clothing that is made with cotton and linen fabrics is best for the summer and they will help you stay cool longer. 

#2 Use Fans to Circulate Air

Running the air conditioner all day and night will not only make your utility bill skyrocket, but it is also wasteful when you can easily keep cooler air circulating throughout your home with a few fans. Investing in free-standing, oscillating fans that are light in weight make it easier to move the fan around the home. Keep your fans circulating in the part of the home where you'll be spending most of your time, as well as in your bedroom so you can catch a good night's sleep even with the unbearable heat of summer. 

#3 Enjoy No-Bake Dinners (Ditch the Oven)

If you have to turn the oven on, I recommend cooking dinner earlier in the day before the heat peaks around lunchtime and the afternoon. You can reheat meals in a toaster oven or microwave to keep the added heat down in the kitchen, or you can opt to have no-bake dinners entirely and indulge in meals like salads and wraps. 

#4 Turn off Unnecessary Appliances

Did you know that many home appliances radiate heat even when they are not in use? I have found that game consoles, computers, and TVs give off the most excess heat when they are running. After I have spent the day sitting at my desk working on my computer, I make sure to shut my computer off once I am done using it and doing this keeps my home office cool. 

#5 Stay Low, Stay Downstairs

Heat rises, so it's best to spend most of your time downstairs or on a lower level of your home during the hottest hours of the day. 

#6 Close the Shades/Use Blackout Curtains

Adam and I have two sets of curtains for all of the windows in our home--one set for summer, and one set for every other season of the year. Our dark curtains help keep the light out of our living room, and we've found by doing this in the summer time it keeps our room at least 15 degrees cooler even with the air conditioner turned off. Keep the shades and curtains closed as much as you can, especially if you have a window that gets a lot of light throughout the day.

#7 Relax and Take it Easy

I try to do most of my house chores and cleaning in the early morning since I know that I usually break a sweat while doing it and I know that if I were to scrub down the entire bathroom at 2 o'clock in the afternoon in the summer I'd be dripping buckets of sweat! Not moving around a lot and sitting in one place will help you stay cool--I've found that sitting down with a good book and taking it easy helps me keep from getting too hot throughout the summer.

#8 Switch out your Bedding and Linens

Pack away any flannel or wool linens until summer is over, and stow away any extra blankets and comforters until the heat subsides. Sleeping on the correct bedding will definitely aid you in getting a good night's sleep, even if the thermometer reads 100 degrees (F) after midnight (and trust me, we have plenty of those nights in Phoenix!)

#9 Keep the Lights off

Like many other appliances, lamps and lights generate heat. Whenever you can, turn the lights off and it will surely help you stay cooler while indoors.

#10 Stay Hydrated

Drinking cold beverages will aid you in cooling off even on the hottest of summer days. It's important to stay hydrated especially during the summer months because increasing your fluid intake will help to counteract the warmer temperatures. I like to enjoy lots of water as well as refreshing vitmaminwater when I am looking for something to drink that has plenty of flavors!

All summer long, I stock up on our household drinks at Safeway including DASANI 8 pk 12 oz, vitaminwater Zero 20 oz, and vitaminwater Zero 6 pk. .5L. I always have a chilled bottle of water or vitaminwater by my side while I sit at my desk and work, so I know I can easily stay hydrated all day long.

  2. Blackout curtains are a must! I discovered them a few years back and can not live without them now! I love them, I can't sleep without them and they make a world of difference in keeping the rooms cooler too!

  6. It amazes me how quick my ice melts, I ended up getting one of those double barrelled stainless steel cups and now I can keep hydrated with ice cold water.

  7. I have to agree with the turning on the fans- I'm a college student and I can't afford expensive utility bills, even if I really hate the heat that summer brings on. Also, it really is important to stay hydrated, even if you stay indoors.
