Our Mini Family: Our Weekend at Sanctuary on Camelback

Our Weekend at Sanctuary on Camelback

For our last summer staycation, we enjoyed a hosted romantic weekend at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa just a short drive from our home in the east valley.

Summertime sadness never looked so glamorous like it did while we enjoyed a weekend away at Sanctuary on Camelback, aka a little slice of heaven in the valley of the sun.

Summer is finally coming to an end (not like how I pretended it was just a couple of weeks ago when I bought my first stash of Halloween decorations). With the end of summer comes cooler temperatures, but it also means that the valley gets a lot louder and filled with more people returning now that the heat is finally starting to calm down. With the thousands of Arizona State University students back in town, the lines will be getting longer and the resorts will be getting busy again. But before the chaos of back-to-school arrived here in this university city, Adam and I took advantage of the ideal time of year for Phoenicians to stay at the spas and resorts around town and had one last staycation in Paradise Valley at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa!

For years I have wanted to swim in the pool at Sanctuary! My dreams finally came true, and I enjoyed the serenity and stunning valley mountain views from the infinity pool swimming alongside my hubby.

After our trip to the infinity pool to cool off from the three digit temperatures of our Phoenix summers, we grabbed our bathrobes and hopped in a golf cart back up to our suite to unwind and get ready for dinner in a couple of hours.

We had a large patio area where we relaxed and did a bit of sunbathing to dry off from our trip down to the infinity pool, and from our patio, we had beautiful and unobstructed views of Camelback mountain and enjoyed the sights of our valley from the comfort of our suite.

The property at Sanctuary is large and there is a lot of privacy here. Unlike many of the resorts in town, we truly felt like we had the place to ourselves when we spent time in our mountain suite. It was quite like a little one bedroom apartment! We had a sizeable dining space with a table and small refrigerator area, as well as a living room with a couch, fireplace, large television mounted to the ceiling, coffee table, and beautiful decor accents around the room.

After relaxing in our room and getting ready for dinner, we took one of the complimentary golf carts from the top of the mountain down to the lobby to check in for our reservation at Elements restaurant.

We sat at one of the low tables towards the center of the room, and we watched as the sun set over Camelback mountain while we enjoyed our meal. We started with a couple of drinks--our favorite was the "blinker," a raspberry, grapefruit, jack single barrel rye, and simple syrup cocktail. It was very strong, but also so smooth and fruity in flavor. Our appetizers we tried included a duck confit plate and also a pork belly dish.

The duck confit moo shu I ordered was tender and cooked to perfection atop a wild rice pancake and topped with a cucumber cashew salad. Adam enjoyed a soft shell crab steam bun packed with barbecue pork belly, pickled radish, and chinese mustard (and this was his favorite part of our meal!)

For our main course, we each ordered our a plate and split them to share. I ordered the bacon wrapped filet of beef, and Adam ordered the hoisin braised short ribs. Although we did enjoy the short ribs and they were perfectly seasoned with the right amount of flavor, the star of our meal was my filet! It was so tender, so perfectly cooked, and a delicious medium rare that every cut of beef deserves! In addition to our main courses, we also ordered a side of their aged cheddar and poblano mac and cheese which was to-die for!

Finally, we ended our meal with a taste of dessert. We first ordered the "pb bombe," which was a plate decorated with malted milk gelato, cracker jack popcorn, and bourbon peanuts. Although it was very tasty, our favorite dessert we tried was the toasted marshmallow s'mores plate! An elegant, deconstructed s'mores plate, we enjoyed a modern and elegant spin on traditional s'mores with caramel gelato, chocolate mousse, and candied hazelnut!

After dinner, we walked across the room and stopped by Jade Bar for after-dinner drinks! We were able to sit and enjoy our drinks for a bit and looked out over the valley from the gorgeous views inside of the lounge area of Jade Bar--Adam had his go-to, an old fashioned, and I enjoyed a drink called "el diablo" which, ironically, tasted like Heaven! There was a large event going on, so we did not end up spending too much time in there before we returned back to our room.

Once we returned to our room, we relaxed for a bit in our living room suite, had a night cap compliments of a bottle of wine present left in our room while we were at dinner, and then we went to bed. We were able to sleep in and enjoy the comfort of the large bed and our comfortable and chic suite, and then we gathered our things and checked out later that morning.
