The Best Places for Foodies to Eat in Greater Door County, Wisconsin

Are you a foodie? Are you headed to the Door County area in Wisconsin? Make sure to check out these spots before you leave the area! Thank you to Door County tourism for hosting our trip and our accommodations!

A few months ago, I had never heard of Door County before. After making a trip out to this part of the country (familiarly known as "the thumb of Wisconsin"), I can understand why people call it the Cape Cod of the Midwest! The 70 miles long peninsula is made up of a number of charming towns you can visit, and with so much to do, see, and eat in Door County, it is no wonder why it is such a popular vacation spot for many families year after year.

Many years ago, Door County was better known as "Cherryland USA." In the middle of the 20th century, they were the largest producer of cherries, and today, they contribute an average of 12 million pounds of tart cherries annually (and are still one of the largest producers of tart cherries in the United States). As you can imagine, we made sure to sample as many tart cherry dishes as we could along our travels in Door County, and all of them were exceptionally delicious!

After making a trip out to Wisconsin to explore Door County for the week, we have narrowed down our favorite spots to eat, and today we are sharing what we think are the best spots for foodies who are visiting the Door County area!

Parador

If there is just one place you absolutely have to visit for a meal in Door County, hands down, our choice would be Parador!

Parador, Wisconsin's tapas restaurant located in Egg Harbor, was the biggest surprise along our foodie adventures; we had no idea that we would discover a restaurant that would deliver such an array of authentic, flavorful Spanish-inspired dishes right in the middle of Door County, Wisconsin!

We sampled a number of different tapas when we stopped by Parador, and among them, perhaps my favorite was the bomba. Bomba, a giant pork meatball, is prepared within a layer of gold potato purée and served on top of roasted red pepper sauce.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and had a taste of their happy hour drinks as well as other tapas from their menu. Although it was a seasonal item, our favorite drink from their menu was a white wine sangria made up of Door County rhubarb with balsamic strawberries. Another tapas plate we particularly enjoyed sampling was their pork ribs plate, prepared with sherry barbecue sauce. Finally, to finish our meal, we had a taste of traditional churros con chocolate dessert served with melted spiced chocolate.

Wilson's

Wilson's Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor has been delivering delicious food since it opened over 100 years ago. Deeply rooted in the history of Ephraim, Wilson's is a staple restaurant to Door County that is not to be missed!

Offering a traditional diner-style menu, Wilson's has an array of different hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, appetizers, and salads on their menu. But no visit to Wilson's is truly complete without a bite of dessert from their ice cream parlor.

With over 13 different ice cream desserts, ice cream sodas and coolers, a variety of extra thick malts and milkshakes, and over two dozen flavors of old fashioned ice cream scoops, if you are in the mood to indulge in some dessert, make your way out to Wilson's to try one of their many ice cream specialities.

If you want to bring the whole family out for ice cream, make sure you save room for the Wilson's Banquet. Five scoops of ice cream, in any flavors you want, topped with any three toppings you want and a mountain of whipped cream and sprinkled with cherries and pecans, the Wilson's Banquet is a foodie's dream! We found it nearly impossible to choose our favorite flavor of ice cream, but two of our favorite flavors were the Door County cherry ice cream and the blueberry crunch ice cream.

Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm

If you are planning on spending more than one day in Door County, then taking the short ferry ride out to Washington Island is a must! On Washington Island, you will find a variety of different businesses and restaurants, and among them, you can visit the Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm and Shop.

Learn about how lavender is grown here in Wisconsin and how it compares to the lavender in France, as well as how the lavender essential oil is gathered and then bottled to be used in a variety of different ways. You can also learn about which types of lavender are used for cooking, and then the other types that are used for varying degrees of bath products like shampoos and lotions. Walk amongst the lavender field and get up close with the plants, and then make your way back to the shop and browse the hundreds of products they offer that are made with lavender.

Exploring Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm, although it is a great morning or afternoon activity, is ultimately a place meant for foodies. Inside of the shop on the farm, there is a bistro and cafe where you can order a variety of gourmet sandwiches, salads, and, you guessed it, foods made with lavender! I sampled a variety of different lavender chocolates and macaroons, and for lunch, I had a delicious salad with a glass of lavender lemonade. Don't forget to try their lavender frozen rosé!

Door County Candy

If you enjoy traditional candy shops, Door County Candy is a must-see along your travels in Door County!

Located in Sturgeon Bay, Door County Candy is a short walking distance from many other stores and restaurants and makes for a great place to start an afternoon of exploring downtown Sturgeon Bay. Inside of Door County Candy, you will find a great assortment of different fudges, candies, chocolates, salt water taffies, popcorns, and toys. For those who want to indulge in more dessert, you can even order some of their ice cream.

Pro Tip: make sure you try their pecan bear claw turtles!

Fred & Fuzzy's

If you enjoy happy hour, a trip to Fred and Fuzzy's Waterfront Bar and Grill should be in your plans!

Relaxing on the waterfront and watching the sunset while you enjoy drinks, dinner, and live music is an ideal way to spend your evening in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. Start the meal with one of their appetizers (we especailly enjoyed the roasted red pepper hummus), and try any one of their many salads, wraps, grilled sandwiches, or grilled specialites. You cannot leave Door County until you have sampled whitefish--Fred and Fuzzy's has a handful of whitefish specialties including a filet, a ruben, a wrap, and an appetizer plate.

Make sure you do not leave Door County until you have also tried a cherry margarita (and Fred and Fuzzy's is known of their Door County cherry margaritas!)

Wild Tomato Pizza

No trip to Wisconsin would be complete without some cheese, and Wild Tomato Pizza is known for having some of the best pizza in Door County!

If you find yourself visiting Door County with someone who has dietary restrictions such as being gluten-free or vegan, Wild Tomato has an agreeable menu that is well-suited for groups with varying dietary needs.

One of the women in our group while we were visiting Door County is vegan, and we found out that Wild Tomato offers a vegan pizza made with vegan cheese (which I wasn't even all that sure existed until that day!) They also offer gluten-free pizza in addition to vegan pizza.

Our group ordered a handful of pizzas and we all tried to sample a slice of each kind. Among all of the pizzas that I sampled, if I had to pick a favorite, I would say it was The Fun Guy pizza (ideal for those who love mushrooms on their pizza). In addition to pizza, they also offer salads, sandwiches, and other American cuisine plates that can accomodate the entire family!

  1. Oh my gosh I love places like this! They decorate this place is so cute and I love small mom-and-pop restaurants. They put so much more personal touch on their food. If I ever get out that way I will definitely check out this restaurant.

    1. A foodie is like someone who often goes out to eat to try new things, as well as experience the local cuisine. I would argue that a foodie would rather eat at a mom and pop diner than go out to a big chain restaurant. Also, it's like someone who enjoys learning about where the ingredients come from and cares to learn when ingredients are locally sourced. Hope that explains it a bit! :)
