4 Reasons Why Sedona is THE Weekend Getaway in Arizona for Couples

There is a reason Sedona is the one city in Arizona we've written the most about, and it's because it is our favorite weekend getaway when we want to enjoy a staycation out of the city! Learn why we think Sedona is the ultimate weekend getaway for couples in Arizona.

Luckily, Adam and I live under two hours from one of the most magical places we have ever visited (which is why we often go back there to explore new places, try new restaurants, and embark on a new kind of hiking or Jeep tour).

Sedona, although it is not a large town, has all kinds of activities, shops, restaurants, spas, and you truly have to visit more than once to get a sense of just how unique this town truly is. Making the road trip up to the Grand Canyon is not as leisurely as making the trip up to Sedona, which is why we prefer going there and often visit Sedona numerous times throughout the year for a weekend staycation.

Having a favorite spot to spend the weekend in our state means we can jump in the car and enjoy the luxury of having a vacation without the cost of airline tickets and baggage. Breaking away from the hustle and bustle of uptown Phoenix is exactly what we need time and time again and among all of the towns in northern Arizona that we have explored, we believe Sedona to be the ideal spot for couples to enjoy a weekend getaway!

Why Sedona is the Best Weekend Getaway for Couples in Arizona

#1 Romantic Red Rock Sunsets

The red rocks of Sedona are unlike anything you have seen. This red, orange sandstone is specific to this type of rock formation that was deposited during the Permian period over 250 million years ago.

There have been times when Adam and I have booked a room with a patio facing the red rocks, and we have sat outside for almost an hour or so just watching the sunset over the rocks. Serenity is the word that comes to mind when I attempt to describe the sensation you will feel watching the sun go down over the rock formations in Sedona. After almost every trip to Sedona, I feel completely relaxed and as though my mind has centered itself. Besides just being beautiful to look at, the red rocks are also a wonderful location for some gorgeous couples photos (and there are a number of highly talented and experienced photographers in the Sedona area to book during your stay).

#2 World-Class Spas and Bed & Breakfasts

When we want to get out of the city to relax and unwind, we prefer to stay at a bed and breakfast or a high-end spa resort. There are many more affordable options to stay in Sedona, such as motels and Airbnb spots, but we have a handful of resorts and inns that we frequent over and over.

The beauty of Sedona is exquisite and unlike any other, and as you can imagine, some of the spa resorts and hotels make a point to ensure that their property highlights the natural beauty of the Sedona landscape. For instance, many resorts and inns have an outdoor patio or large window facing a red rock formation. It is almost as if they make a point to ensure that you can get a glimpse of the red rocks no matter where you go, which is ideal for those who want to enjoy a relaxing and peaceful weekend getaway (as I mentioned before, it is said by some that these red rocks can induce a sensation of serenity and   peace).

Some spa resorts or bed and breakfasts are in downtown Sedona, and then there are a few that are just 10-15 minutes away from the tourist area on the outskirts of town. When we visit, we prefer to stay in the resorts and inns that are away from downtown but can be easily accessed with just a quick drive. Depending on what time of year you visit, downtown Sedona may have higher foot traffic (as it is a popular tourist attraction), so we prefer to visit downtown to eat or shop, and then retreat to our quieter hotel to unwind after a day of exploring.

#3 Plenty of Outdoor Recreation

You do not have to be an active, athletic person to enjoy the outdoor recreation of Sedona.

There are plenty of high-energy activities you can partake in while you visit Sedona if you are more athletic and looking for something to do with your partner while you enjoy the outdoor beauty of the red rocks. However, there are many things that do not require you to be very active or in-shape (which is great for older couples, couples with special needs, or couples who would simply rather relax than exercise during their weekend getaway).

While visiting Sedona, two of our most exciting tours have included a helicopter tour, as well as a pink Jeep tour. While the helicopter tour was exciting, it was also brief! If you are looking for something to do to enjoy the gorgeous red rocks outside, one of the most common activities or tours that Sedona offers is a tour in a Jeep going up and around the red rock formations. We had a great time spending a few hours in our Jeep tour driving around Sedona, making our way up the mountain, and taking in stunning views of the red rocks from atop a rock formation.

#4 The Drive is Under Two Hours from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

If you are an Arizona local, you can most certainly enjoy the car ride to Sedona (and it may even be a brief road trip, depending on where in the state you live). But if you are coming to Phoenix for a vacation and looking for an ideal spot to enjoy a weekend getaway that is a little bit different than the metropolitan city of Phoenix, you can rent a car with Alamo Rent a Car at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and make the relatively short, 2 hours trip to Sedona!

When our parents fly out to Arizona to visit with us, they typically opt to rent a car at the airport to have the freedom to explore Arizona at their leisure and avoid planning their vacation time around our work schedules during the day. Alamo Rent a Car at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is open 24 hours, offers online check-in, self-service kiosks, and even a "Skip the Counter" option for those who travel frequently and prefer to get in and out as quickly as possible. Be sure to consult with your rental agreement to confirm what limitations may be in place before making the trip up to Sedona to avoid any travel fees (i.e. any applicable mileage restrictions).

Alamo Rent a Car partnered with us on this post to talk about our favorite weekend getaway for couples in Arizona, and we invite you to check out these 3 Warm-Weather Weekend Getaways for Couples from the Scenic Route for additional vacation inspiration!

  9. Sedona looks beautiful! My mother-in-law always wanted to see the Grand Canyon, so my brother-in-law and his wife planned a big trip to see it. He insisted on taking her to Sedona as well, and it was her favorite part of the trip.

  12. I used to live in Flagstaff. Sedona was a fun place even for us Flagstaffians to visit. We loved hiking the trails and seeing the little prop planes take off from the airport at the top of that hill attached to the restaurant. Its an epic view up there. I think you can even see the vortex from there. I also just love Oak Creek Canyon especially in the fall when the aspens change color.
