The Lavender Paradise of the Midwest | Our Visit to Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm

Just a short ferry ride from the top of the thumb in Wisconsin, you can make your way out to Washington Island and discover the beauty that is the lavender paradise of the Midwest: Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm.

Washington Island, approximately a 5 miles ferry ride away from the mainland, houses a number of unique attractions that bring in many visitors from Door County. If there is one specific reason you need to make a trip out to Washington Island this summer it is to visit Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm and Shop.

A vision of green and purple, Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm and Shop is a little slice of Provence paradise right in midst of the Midwest. During your day trip to Washington Island, an afternoon visit to see and experience Fragrant Isle is an absolute must!

I had a chance to speak in-depth with the owner, Martine Anderson, during my visit to Fragrant Isle.

One of Martine's goals is to provide an upscale farm experience for guests. Knowing she had to find a way to sustain the farm because they do not charge entry to visit their lavender farm, she envisioned a French bistro and shop at Fragrant Isle that would transport visitors to a place that offers luxury goods, delicious food, and all things lavender. Her childhood growing up in France coupled with her experience working in couture, Martine has most certainly done just as she planned and has created a space at Fragrant Isle that is a fusion between European-inspired luxury goods and food as well as the warm and inviting farmhouse atmosphere you would find in the Midwest.

Offering tours to walk through the lavender field and learning about the process that goes into growing these elegant plants, Fragrant Isle also has an event calendar worth checking out while you are planning your visit to Washington Island (you can view their event calendar here). In addition to tours, they have a retail shop that has almost every single lavender gift and beauty product you could possibly think of and want. But most undoubtedly, perhaps my favorite reason I love going to Washington Island is to enjoy a variety of the delicious, delicate desserts and lavender drinks available at Fragrant Isle.

Foodies rejoice!

No trip to Fragrant Isle is complete without a stop by their bistro counter to sample some of the most delicious treats on the entire island and arguably in all of Door County. There is a wide variety of chocolates, truffles, and candies to choose from in their large confectionery case. In addition to sweets, they also offer a handful of to-go lunch options including one of the better French sandwiches I have had while traveling in the U.S (and the bread they use is impeccable).

If you want to enjoy some light bites or even stop for lunch with the entire family, there is a variety of items available at their bistro. Their menu is oftentimes changing each season, as Martine mentioned she loves to work with her chef to create the best options available. During my visit, some of the lunch items that stood out to me were the chicken salad, keto kone, and their French sandwich.

All of the food that is available at Fragrant Isle is inspired by Martine's childhood growing up in France and her passion for all things lavender. I asked her what some of her best recommendations were to guests who need some help deciding what to enjoy at the bistro and she told me that she hopes everyone has a chance to try some of the lavender macaroons, chocolates, their fairy lavender sugar cookie, as well as the lavender wine slushie.

Many of the lavender products and food available at the bistro are made in Wisconsin, and quite a few of them are also made in partnership with other women in business in the Door County area. Partnering with brands such as Renard's Cheese and Seaquist Orchards, Martine also brings a touch of her luxury culinary lavender back to the mainland as there are a few items available at various Door County shops that are infused with Fragrant Isle lavender elixirs and oils.

Do you want to enjoy a little fiesta while you walk around the lavender field and partake in some lavender-themed happy hour drinks? There are some lovely lavender cocktail options at Fragrant Isle including two of my favorites which were their lavender cotton candy Prosecco as well as the lavender wine slushie (which was also one of Martine's personal recommendations for guests).

When you plan your trip to visit Fragrant Isle, I definitely recommend checking out their calendar to see if they have any events coming up that you would be interested in. This summer, they are offering a variety of things such as yoga classes and massages in the lavender field, and some French wine and culinary events that foodies are sure to enjoy.
