Best in Beauty 2019

Today I am sharing the best of the best beauty products I tried and fell in love with throughout 2019!

We're only a handful of days into a new decade and after spending some much-needed time on a hiatus away from social media, I'm excited to map out my plans for the new year and some of the projects that will be coming to the blog. But before we move forward, I wanted to take a moment to hit the pause button and stop to talk about some of the best things about last year. Today, I am sharing the best of the best beauty products that I tried from last year.

Some of these products were introduced for the first time in 2019, and then there are some here that made my list because this was the year that I first tried it and then instantly fell in love. But these are the best items that I discovered last year and I will be bringing with me into my routine in 2020.

Shane Dawson X Jeffree Star Cosmetics

Let's talk about that launch, sis!

In case you were hiding under a rock all of 2019, chances are (at the very least) you have heard about the Shane Dawson collaboration with Jeffree Star Cosmetics. Between the hype all year long, the behind-the-scenes Instagram Stories on Jeffree's account and Shane's account, Shane YouTube series, and then the epic (and, frankly, failed) launch that resulted in millions and millions of website visitors resulting in tens or even hundreds of thousands of people not being able to order any of the products. I only say that it was a failure due to website server errors the day of the launch in addition to the flawed manufacturing and shipping facility issues Jeffree encountered for weeks following the launch.

The products themselves? Gorgeous. Downright fun. It was a pleasure to see the process of Shane discovering his passion for makeup, Jeffree mentoring him, and seeing their emotion towards the final unveiling of the products in the YouTube series. I was able to swatch the Conspiracy palette but I could not get my hands on one. The only thing I was able to order the day of the lanch was the coveted black pig hand mirror

Jeffree Star Cosmetics Blue Blood Palette

I promise I'll stop obsessing over Jeffree Star Cosmetics in a second. But I would be lying if I hadn't mentioned the Blue Blood Palette while doing a best in beauty year in review blog post. There were admittedly a few things I did not like that he launched during the year--but we won't get into that--but out of all the beauty products this past year besides from his collaboration with Shane Dawson, it's easy to say without a doubt that the Blue Blood eyeshadow palette is by far the most iconic eyeshadow palette of the year.

Between every shade's pigment made with a high-quality formula that blends to the gods, and its insanely iconic packaging, the Blue Blood palette is by far the best from last year in every category. Sure, it's a luxury brand. But if my eyeshadows are near perfection and come stored in a blue casket? *Insert the 'shut up and take my money' meme here*

AMOREPACIFIC Treatment Enzyme Peel Cleansing Powder

While the full size is an investment in itself, I can say with no hesitation that the AMOREPACIFIC Treatment Enzyme Peel Cleansing Powder is one of the best things to happen to my skincare routine. And the best part? Just a little bit of product goes a long way.

After much time and experimenting with my skin, I've come to learn that you truly get what you pay for--and with this AMOREPACIFIC cleansing powder, you are paying for genuine ingredients that will bring real benefits to your skin. Sometimes the word "peel" brings hesitation, but I have somewhat sensitive skin and even this is so gentle I can (and I do) use this every night during my nightly skincare routine. With a little bit of water, this powder turns to a foamy cleanser that works well to wash the day away and leaves my skin feeling clean and ready to take more skincare.

Glo Skin Beauty Moisturizing Tint SPF 30+

Most days, I do not wear a full face of makeup that takes an hour to do. While I enjoy wearing makeup on the weekends and when I am going out with friends or going out for date night with Adam, on a regular workday I usually wear a tinted moisturizer, mascara, maybe a cream blush, and lip balm. I have tried a bucketload of tinted moisturizers, but once I tried the Glo Skin Beauty's Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30 I knew that would be my holy grail.  It leaves my skin feeling soft and not oily, and it gives a veil that's close to my natural skin color to my skin that helps reduce the appearance of redness that I have in my cheeks. And let's not neglect to mention that it is an easy way to ensure I'm wearing sunscreen on my face and neck on a workday when I may not have a lot of time to focus on getting ready for the day.

YSL Touche Eclat High Cover Radiant Undereye Concealer Pen

I'll admit it. When I first tried this, I hated the way that it was packaged. "A pen? Why?" Well, after much trial and error with this pen and discovering that it has a learning curve, I finally figured out that with each click it dispenses the exact amount that I need to concealer my under eyes. Once it was primed properly and I had used it a few times, I finally figured it out. And now the YSL Touche Eclat High Cover Radiant Undereye Concealer Pen is my go-to concealer when I am wearing a full face of makeup. It dramatically brightens my under eyes and helps to counteract my dark circles, and it lays well underneath setting powder and does not cake up. At first, I did not like the fact that it came in a pen but now it has taught me the right amount of concealer that I need to use and has honestly made applying concealer more effective.

Wander Beauty Mile High Club™ Volume  and Length Mascara

I constantly try new mascara and throw it away only after a few weeks of use. I know, I know. It's not exactly the most sustainable thing for me to do. But mascara is by far my most consumed makeup item between the amount that I use as well as how little usually comes in a product. But the game changed for me when I tried Wander Beauty's Mile High Club™ Volume and Length Mascara

Mario Badescu Lip Balm

Phoenix is dry, and for me, that means I am in a constant state of trying to keep my lips from getting dry or cracked. This Mario Badescu Lip Balm that comes in a squeeze tube comes with me everywhere I go and it's a must-have for everyday wear. I have used a couple of the scents that they offer and I have enjoyed every variety of their lip balm that I have tried.

The Honest Company Truly Calming Lavender Shampoo & Body Wash

Last year, I shared some of my hair care goals for my thirties on the blog (in case you missed it, you can take a look here) and I have made it a focus to take better care of my hair.  For me, that means washing it less, washing it with better products, and being more gentle with my hair (e.g. less styling with heat, a better hairbrush, etc).

Discovering which kinds of hair products actually work well for my hair after learning more about my hair type and having an honest conversation with myself about how I want to style (or not-so-much style) my hair every day helped me learn what kinds of hair products I actually needed in my bathroom. My point? I don't style my hair every day. I do, however, wash my hair every 3 or 4 days and blow dry my bangs. But that's about it on a regular basis. The extent of styling my hair is using dry shampoo to freshen up the oil that may be collecting in my hair, maybe a volumizing spray, and then I tussle my hair and I'm done. For years, I told myself I would spend more time curling my hair and braiding my hair, but, I've come to realize I simply can't make that a daily priority.

I am all about lengthening the duration of my hair care products and using The Honest Company's Truly Calming Lavender Shampoo and Body Wash along with my dry shampoo has worked for me this year and it's what I will continue to do. My goal is to reduce the number of times I wash my hair, and this shampoo that doubles as a body wash cleans my hair well and doesn't leave any residue.

Tangle Teezer The Original Detangling Hair Brush

My mom could attest to this---my hair is awful to have to brush. It's fussy, fine, and it will start tangling up if you even look at it the wrong way. After 30 years of trying to figure out what works to brush my hair without hurting myself or ripping all of my hair out, I finally found the holy grail of hairbrushes for hair that's hard to brush.

The Tangle Teezer's Orignal Detangling Hair Brush is the best hairbrush I have ever used hands down. I have even got Adam hooked on it. He continued to try to steal mine and I'd constantly have to look for my hairbrush and I'd always find it on his bathroom sink (until I finally just bought him his own to keep in his bathroom!)

Verb Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair

2019 was the year of holy grail hair products for me, and dry shampoo is no different. Now that I've tried the VERB Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair I am never going back.

I never understood how everyone loved their dry shampoo and I spent most of my twenties struggling to understand everyone's obsession with dry shampoos. Other products would leave this horribly unflattering white or grey overcast on my hair regardless of how long I let it sit on my roots or how much I tried to rub it in. Feeling left out, I had almost given up on dry shampoo completely. Until I stumbled upon this when I was ordering VERB Ghost Shampoo™ from the Sephora site and the dry shampoo for dark hair was in my recommended products. This dry shampoo is obviously only meant for those with darker hair and would look silly on someone with lighter hair. But now that I've found it and since it works so well for me, I constantly re-order and keep multiple cans on hand so I never run out.

Scrunchies!

Well, this is not meant for any particular brand but it was the year of all scrunchies in 2019.
We're talking any and all scrunchies I can get my hands on. I've got a newfound obsession with fashion scrunchies.

I finally decided after turning 30 that it was time to break up with harsh, elastic rubber bands when I need to put up my hair. Going back to my hair care goals for my thirties, a big part of wanting to take better care of my hair was to reduce breakage. My hair is fine and looks and feels thin, so I want to maintain the hair that I do have on my head. Switching to fabric scrunchies and ditching elastic or rubber bands has been a game-changer for me. Making the switch to wear scrunchies is probably the best change to my beauty routine in all of 2019.
