Reviewing the e.l.f. Cosmetics x Chipotle Collab Eyeshadow Palette

Are e.l.f. Cosmetics eye shadow palettes really worth the hype? I put their Chipotle palette to the test!

e.l.f. Cosmetics x Chipotle eyeshadow palette swatches

Admittedly, this is my first e.l.f. Cosmetics eyeshadow product in over 2 years. So, I can't really compare my experience using their eyeshadows years ago to this new palette. Beauty brands are constantly changing their formula, so for me to assume this is the same formula they had 2 years ago would be unlikely. It's also worth mentioning that I normally buy eyeshadow palettes ranging between $60-80, so for me to compare this to one of those palettes within that higher price range would not be fair.

For the sake of this review, I am not going to compare this product to any other palettes.

Packaging:

Palette: Metallic grey that resembled aluminum foil which is a fun nod to the Chipotle burrito that is wrapped in aluminum foil.

First impressions: I love that it has a mirror built into this palette for the price, and I like that it had a clear protective cover over the eyeshadows. This cover also wraps around the back of the palette to really keep it secure and in place. This cover also doubles as a display to show the shade names.

Eyeshadow shades:

There are 12 eyeshadows in this palette and 6 of them are double-sized pans. There is a mix of matte, satin, and shimmer eyeshadows ranging from cream to brown,  copper to red, olive green to army green, and mauve to eggplant.

Top row from left to right: Lettuce, Guac, Corn Salsa, Mild Salsa, Pinto Beans, Black Beans, White Rice, and Brown rice.

Bottom row from left to right: Green Salsa, Hot Salsa, Sofritas, and Fajita.

Pros:

#1 Wearable colors that would be great for all-year wear.

I really enjoy earth-toned eyeshadows over artificial ones for everyday wear, and this palette has several really natural-looking eyeshadows that would be perfect for someone who wants to wear a pop of color on the eyelid without looking too over the top with color. I have a suspicion that this will be my go-to eyeshadow palette through this whole summer! Not to mention, the earth-toned greens, copper, browns, and purples would look really lovely with my fall wardrobe, too!

#2 Overall, they are really blendable and have a nice payoff!

Some shades were more giving than others, but I was able to manage blending each and every shade nicely with different eyeshadows in the palette. The shades "lettuce" and "hot salsa" were both surprisingly very pigmented, and after I took my eyeshadow off at the end of the day there was only minor staining on the lids. I expected a lot more staining since they were so pigmented and this was a budget eyeshadow palette, but it was very minor which is awesome! All of these shades are totally wearable and easy enough to work with (there was only one shade that was tougher to work with and that is the matte brown shade "Pinto Beans" and you can see it was a little streaky on my first swatch)--I give this palette a solid 8/10!

Cons:

#1 The ingredients are not great (Mica/Talc)

Sadly, the price you pay for an affordable/budget eyeshadow palette is the ingredients.

The first ingredient on the list? Mica. That's kind of a red flag for me.

While not all mica is bad, it really depends on how it's sourced and if it is "ethically" sourced. According to the e.l.f. Cosmetics website, their "Beauty Squad Terms and Conditions" which you can read here, their company says they are "committed to ensuring that the manufacturers and suppliers we work with meet our standards."

There are many resources to look into to make an educated decision on brands you want to support that may or may not use these kinds of ingredients. But if you want my opinion? Mica is not a preferred ingredient. There are more health and ethical complications associated with mining this fine mineral for beauty and skincare products, and if given the choice, I'd pick a product that doesn't have mica in it.

The third ingredient on the eyeshadow palette? Talc.  If you're not sure what mica and talc are, I would suggest if you're interested in doing a quick search online.

#2 It has a 6 months shelf life

Sadly, this palette only has a 6 months shelf life and it's only April. Remember how I said this eyeshadow palette would be great to go with my fall wardrobe? Well, I don't think it will last past late September due to the fact that it's got a shorten shelf life. I would definitely buy this palette again if I could (but it is limited edition, so it's unlikely they will put it back in stock).

The final verdict?

Is it worth the hype? Absolutely! It was affordable, the eyeshadows worked beautifully, and it is always fun to buy something that is limited edition! Next time e.l.f. Cosmetics comes out with another limited edition eyeshadow palette collab, I will definitely be considering getting another palette since I liked this one so much!

  1. I never heard of Chipotle makeup but the colors do look nice for year round. I do not use makeup so lasting is a big issue for me.

  8. I like the colors and the name of the palette. However, the use of mica and talc is a "no" for me and also only 6 months shelf life. I don't wear much make up, so it would be a waste for me. Thanks for sharing.
