A Comprehensive Review of Selfless by Hyram

Have you heard of Selfless by Hyram the new skincare brand from a famous skincare YouTuber? Today, I'm reviewing the entire launch of his skincare brand, and putting his skincare products to the test!

Who is Hyram?

Hyram is a well-known, Internet personality with a popular YouTube Channel. Since his debut on YouTube, Hyram has been reviewing skincare products and sharing his love of knowledge about all things skincare. Among his love for skincare, Hyram has also been a public advocate for sustainability and calling for skincare brands to choose more sustainable ingredients.

For years, Hyram's YouTube fans have been speculating when he'd finally come up with his own skincare products. Well, when the moment came for Hyram to announce he had a skincare brand his fans from YouTube and Instagram flocked to his new website to support his very own skincare company: Selfless by Hyram.

Is Selfless by Hyram a good skincare brand?

In a short answer, yes. However, it's not the next best skincare brand in the world and there's certainly room for improvement.

I really, really enjoy Hyram's videos. He's got a likable personality, and if you love skincare, he's always got some great tips and information to share and it's likely you will learn something new when you watch his channel.

However, at the end of the day, Hyram is just another beauty influencer. And what have we seen with beauty influencer brands? Well, a mix of good, bad, and catastrophic (*coughs* hairy lipsticks *coughs*).

So, if you take away the brand's sustainability mission and the YouTube personality, is Selfless by Hyram actually a good skincare brand? Let's talk about it in greater detail!

The Products

When Selfless by Hyram launched, I purchased everything in the line from SelflessbyHyram.com. Everything in this product line is touted for being fragrance-free, palm-free, vegan, and cruelty-free. On top of that, when I purchased the entire line, Selfless by Hyram stated they would provide someone with a year's worth of clean drinking water through the Thirst Project. In addition, Selfless by Hyram also made a donation to Rainforest Trust to fight climate change by protecting the critical plants that are often targeted by deforestation.

Amazing, right? But let's put Hyram's sustainability mission aside and talk about the actual skincare.

Selfless by Hyram Centella & Green Tea Hydrating Gel Cleanser in sand

Centella & Green Tea Hydrating Gel Cleanser

What I really like about this Selfless by Hyram gel cleanser is that it lathers up nicely. When you apply a small amount to the palm of your hand and then rub your hands together, it lathers and froths up really well and when you cleanse your face you can feel where you've worked the product (and the texture changes the more you work on a certain area so you don't have to repeat washing).

My initial reaction when opening the cleanser is that it lacked a scent.

Which honestly, is exactly what I was expecting. Anyone who watches Hyram's videos on his YouTube channel knows he does not prefer skincare with perfume (and any skincare lover would know that most fragrances in skincare can be irritating to the skin and that it's an unnecessary ingredient). In Hyram's videos when he reviews skincare brands, he preaches that ingredients should be chosen carefully and thoughtfully (and that fragrances don't necessarily fall into that).

As far as how I like the gel cleanser, I really do like it!

Will I buy it again? Yes, absolutely!

bottle of Selfless by Hyram Mandelic Acid & Rice Bran Gentle Exfoliating Serum in sand

Mandelic Acid & Rice Bran Gentle Exfoliating Serum

The exfoliating serum from Selfless by Hyram has a really nice formula and applies nicely to the skin. This serum is strictly a nighttime serum that works to gently exfoliate the skin.

What I really like about the Mandelic Acid & Rice Bran Gentle Exfoliating Serum is that it's packed with ingredients my skin responds really well to and that it's a chemical exfoliant. I've pretty much done away with physical exfoliants altogether (but the last few physical exfoliants that I have in circulation are strictly for body wash/exfoliation), so I've shifted my focus to finding chemical exfoliants that work well in evening out my skin texture over time and help prevent clogging my pores.

The Selfless by Hyram Mandelic Acid & Rice Bran Gentle Exfoliating Serum is slick in texture, so it goes on really easily and makes it a LOT easier for me to get an even application all over my face and neck. I also really like that when I wake up the morning after I use this my face is not slightly red (which can happen for me sometimes when I exfoliate the night before), so this formula is a lot better for my sensitive skin.

Since my skin doesn't react as much when I use it, I can actually make it a part of my regular routine and opt to use it every night that I'm not using retinol (it's important to note that you should not use this alongside retinol). Overall, I really like the application and the results are spot on!

Will I buy it again? Yes!

bottle of Selfless by Hyram Niacinamide & Maracujá Daily Barrier Support Moisturizer in the sand

Niacinamide & Maracujá Daily Barrier Support Moisturizer

So I know Hyram really loves his moisturizer, but sadly, I don't.

Now, let me explain why I do not like this moisturizer. I prefer my moisturizer to linger on my skin for a minute so I can really tell that I applied it, and since I like to indulge when I apply my skincare, I enjoy the moment after I complete a step so I can really feel the change on my skin. The thing is, this moisturizer from Selfless by Hyram seeps into the skin way too fast. Like, lightning fast! And I do not have dry skin.

Beyond that, I don't feel that this moisturizer actually moisturized my skin and I felt like I had to go back for more product! It was unsatisfying to use and left me feeling confused as to whether or not I wanted to apply a second layer (which should never be the case with moisturizer).

Will I buy it again? Sadly, no.

Selfless by Hyram Retinol & Rainbow Algae Repair Serum bottle in the sand

Retinol & Rainbow Algae Repair Serum

I don't have any hot or cold feelings about how this serum applies or feels. I had a natural experience with the application of it, but I have some thoughts I want to share regarding the ingredients.

One thing I wish he could change about this formula is adding more % of retinol. When you look at the ingredients, retinol is pretty far down the list. Retinol is one of the ingredients I look for in skincare products now that I'm well into my skincare journey as a 32 years old woman because it does wonders for anti-aging. Retinol can slow the body's aging process down, and now that I'm in my 30s, I'm looking to do what I can to keep my skin healthy while also preventing wrinkles and further skin damage. The fact that retinol is the first word named in this product and that it's so far down in the ingredients list leaves me feeling weary.

Really, this product should be called "Squalane and Rainbow Algae Repair Serum" instead since it's got significantly more squalane than it does retinol (and yes, I know that squalane and retinol are not the same, but it comes down to the % used in this and I think this product is a result of poor marketing and confuses the consumer).

Will I buy it again? No, I don't think I will. Not because I hated the way it made my skin feel and look, but just because of the sheer fact that there are other retinol branded skincare products that have more retinol in them.

Selfless by Hyram Salicylic Acid & Sea Kelp Pore Clearing and Oil Control Serum bottle in the sand

Salicylic Acid & Sea Kelp Pore Clearing and Oil Control Serum

I've been using this serum every other day since I got the products and I don't have much of an opinion about it. What I can say I like with absolute certainty though are the ingredients!

Salicylic acid and niacinamide are great for pore-clearing and oil control, and I have a particularly oily T-zone this time of year. Most worthy of note when you consider the ingredients is that niacinamide is the 2nd listed ingredient (which means it has the 2nd most composition of it compared to the other ingredients).

What I don't like about it is that it's pretty basic and if you have a skincare routine, you already have a product in your circulation that does what this product can do for you. And I do! In fact, I really like the product I have for pore-clearing and oil control and it tames my T-zone nicely during monsoon season. So when I compare what I have to this serum from Selfless by Hyram, there isn't much of a difference. Sadly, there is nothing special about this serum for me so it's unlikely I will sing its praises beyond this review.

Will I buy it again? Probably not. If it were a little bit cheaper or if the other serum I use is out of stock would I buy this again? Maybe.

Final thoughts

As someone who watches Hyram's videos, I can only imagine how meticulous Hyram must have been when formulating these products for his skincare brand. I really appreciate that all of the products were palm-free and fragrance-free because I would have been shocked if they weren't knowing what he's said in his YouTube videos. But with that said, I think he could have done better with ingredients (particularly the retinol serum).

Also, this launch was missing one pivotal product, and can you guess what that was?

Sunscreen.  Hyram, where's the sunscreen? *slaps credit card on the table*

I can safely speak for many of Hyram's other viewers when I say that a lot of us were expecting sunscreen from Selfess by Hyram. So many of us were hyped and ready to buy sunscreen from him. And look, I get that a lot more has to go into the formulation for that compared to cleansers and serums, but this launch felt incomplete for him and his whole brand without a sunscreen. If and when he does release sunscreen, I will absolutely consider buying it!

Lacking sunscreen, this launch felt a little disappointing. I would have rather he waited another year (or even 2 years!) for a sunscreen formula from him. But time is money, and after all, he is just another beauty influencer looking to make money while also pushing his sustainability mission. So why would he push the launch for 1 product? He wouldn't.

Overall, the initial launch of products from Selfless by Hyram went well. His website didn't crash when I tried to buy his products, there weren't any dramatic shipping dilemmas, and I got everything I bought as expected. I am happy for Hyram and I wish him all the success in the world! I hope that he continues to formulate products and continues to have a sustainable approach to skincare (which ultimately is what will set him apart from the big dogs in the beauty business). I will absolutely continue to support him when I can, but sadly, I will not be repurchasing all of these products.
