Bacon & Dark Chocolate Tart

Yes, you read that right! We made dark chocolate tarts with bacon!

I know you are probably thinking, "Cathy, what is wrong with you?" Well, to be honest, I'm not entirely sure! But the other day, I really had a hankering for something sweet but regular chocolate just didn't sound good. I needed something salty and sweet (ladies, you know exactly what I mean!)

So I made my chocolate tarts per usual and then thought "what the heck!" I fried up bacon in the griddle and went to town! Adam wasn't a huge fan of them--he admitted he couldn't get past how weird it was to really enjoy them; he compared it the first time he tried tri-color macaroni and was convinced each color had a different flavor, and that in this moment his brain was telling his taste buds something totally different!

Recipe adapted from All Recipes dot com
  • Ingredients:

    • 1/2 a stick of room-temperature butter
    • 1 egg
    • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 3/4 cup regular flour
    • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chocolate cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 cup half and half
  • 2 large strips of bacon
  • And 1 cup of your favorite dark chocolate frosting
  • Directions:

    1. 1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
    2. 2. In a large bowl, cream your butter and sugar together until it is fluffy. Crack egg into large bowl and continue beating ingredients until will blended.
    3. 3. Once ingredients are well blended, add in vanilla extract and repeat.
    4. 4. In a separate bowl, whisk cocoa, flour, and baking soda together.
    5. 5. Add half of your bowl of dry ingredients into your first bowl (butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla) and beat until well mixed.
    6. 6. Whisk in your half and half into your first large bowl (i.e. butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla).
    7. 7. Finally, beat in second half of dry bowl (i.e. cocoa, flour, and baking soda) until all ingredients are whisked and evenly spread together into one bowl.
    8. 8. Dispense cake mix into tarts baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 325 degrees.
    9. 9. Fry bacon in griddle on medium high for 8-10 minutes, simultaneously flipping bacon until it's fried until desired. On a plate, place down 2 sheets of paper towels and set bacon down on top of paper towel covered plate. Set an additional sheet of paper towel on top of bacon and let sit until cooled.
    10. 10. Grab your favorite dark chocolate frosting and pipe a bag to insert frosting onto tarts.
    11. 11. Remove chocolate tarts from oven and let cool.
    12. 12. Pipe in frosting into the top cavity of each tart.
    13. 13. Crumble bacon on the plate and sprinkle it on top of tart frosting.
    14. 14. Serve and enjoy!

  • So tasty!
What is especially awesome about these tarts is that it allows for the perfect chocolate: bacon ratio!
(i.e. mostly chocolate, with just a hint of bacon)
