An Arizona Guide to Giving Back this Thanksgiving

It's that time of year! 

A time to celebrate family, friends, and our favorite foods! For our Arizona locals: we decided to compile a list of the ways to spend time giving back through charity on Thanksgiving in or around the Greater Phoenix area:

Community Service Opportunities this Thanksgiving:

Donate a Frozen Turkey Event
Description: Sunday, November 9th there is an open house hosted by Phoenix Rescue mission, and they are collecting frozen turkeys to help feed the homeless. Their goal is to receive 700 or more turkeys--bring your turkey and your family! It will be a lot of fun while you give back, as there will be music, lunch, and a tour of the Mission! Event start on November 9th, 2014 at 11:00am. More info on their website here

St. Mary's and Safeway Turkey Match Donations
Description: from November 2 until November 27, donate a turkey to St. Mary's Food Bank and Safeway will match your donation! Safeway has teamed up with St. Mary's to help do some good for those in Arizona this Thanksgiving season. While you are shopping for groceries at Safeway between now and November 27, buy a turkey and donate before you leave the store. By doing this, you've essentially donated 2 turkeys, since Safeway is matching all donations. More info on their website here

Food Box and Turkey Delivery
Description: assemble and deliver food boxes to Phoenix families is need. If you sign up, you will receive the name and address of a family that has been identified by the government as "working poor" that you can bring a delivery of food to. This will help families in the area who may struggle to afford a nice, classic Thanksgiving meal for their family. The delivery event is held on November 22, 2014 from 9:00am until 12:00pm. Super Saturday Turkey Drive with St. Mary's
Description: participate in the annual turkey drive event hosted by St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance at one of 17 locations (including Albertson's supermarkets) in and around the Phoenix, Glendale, Flagstaff, and Surprise areas on November 22, 2014 from 9:00am until 3:00pm. Donate a turkey along with any other non-perishable food goods to help those in need in Arizona this Thanksgiving season. More info on their website here

Birds on Bikes--St. Vincent de Paul
Description: grab your motorcycle and a turkey to donate, and ride down to one of four locations on November 23, 2014 at 10:00am to meet other bikers. Bikers from all over the valley meet to do some good this Thanksgiving season. More info on their website here

Phoenix Rescue Mission Thanksgiving Day Event
Description: bring your family and put together sack meals for the community kitchen. Located at Phoenix Rescue Mission. Event being held on November 27, 2014 from 9:30am until l:00pm. Additional donations to bring include: peanut butter and jelly, apples/oranges, and zip lock sandwich bags. More info on their website here

Feeding Phoenix--Donating from Home
Description: do something good from the comfort of your home and donate to help the Phoenix homeless community. By donating just $1.92, this will provide a meal to a hungry person in Phoenix this Thanksgiving season. There are a range of donations options already set up to choose from. Arizona Coyotes Food Benefit
Description: the Arizona Coyotes are collecting food and funds this year at their game on November 29, 2014 at the game at the Gila River Arena--proceeds will go to St. Mary's food bank this holiday season. They have a shortage and desperately need a donation of the following items: one-pound bags of rice and beans, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, canned cranberries, and canned meats. If you live in and around the Gila River Arena (or are planning on going to the game that day), stop by the area between 4:30pm and 6:00pm before the game starts to drop off donations.
