7 Reasons You and Your Family Should Visit Schlitterbahn New Braunfels

Last week, we had a chance to travel to San Antonio to explore Schlitterbahn New Braunfels for the first time. See all of the details from our trip to Texas to visit Schlitterbahn, and see why you and your family should plan a trip out there this summer--thank you to Schlitterbahn New Braunfels for hosting our adventures and inviting us!

If your summer travels bring you to Texas this year and you are near San Antonio, make a short drive out to Schlitterbahn New Braunfels to enjoy the world's best waterpark voted 20 years in a row!

There are a number of reasons why we thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, but if we had to narrow it down to just a handful or so, we think these seven reasons will have you packing your bags and making plans to bring the whole family out for some waterpark fun!

#1 The Food

Schlitterbahn New Braunfels allows its guests to bring their own food into the park (with the exception of glass items and alcohol) and provides families a chance to afford to go to the park together without having to shell out the cash for waterpark food. That said, the food at Schlitterbahn New Braunfels has everything you would ever want from a theme park or waterpark and then some!

Whether you are in the mood for traditional, smoked Texas barbecue, one of their many unique and savory burger combos, or a big plate of dessert to share with all of your friends, Schlitterbahn exceeds your expectations when it comes to food. You can opt to bring lunch or dinner in a cooler or picnic basket in the park, or you can splurge on any one of their delicious combo meal options. But if you visit Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, you absolutely must try one of their funnel cakes.

There are not one, not two, but three different kinds of ice cream sundae funnel cakes you can try at Schlitterbahn New Braunfels!

Are there a bunch of adults in your group who want to enjoy happy hour? There are a number of swim-up bars at Schlitterbahn New Braunfels that you can take advantage of, too!

#2 The Cabanas

If you are thinking about bringing a large group of people with you to Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, it would be worth your time to consider renting one of their cabanas. There are a number of benefits to renting their cabanas, but perhaps one of the best reasons is that there will always be a cooler, shaded area waiting for you to escape to after a few hours in the sun.

There are a number of different types of cabanas you can rent, varying to accommodate between 6-10 people. Each cabana comes with its own locker so you can secure your valuables while you enjoy the rides, and even before you enter the park, you can take advantage of the benefits of having a reserved parking spot (which is especially great for those who are not planning on staying at the resort).

In addition to enjoying the comfort of the shaded cabana, there is no need to go stand in line to grab lunch since you can also order food and drinks right from your lounge chair in your very own cabana.  Many cabanas are also equipped with a mini refrigerator and 42" television, so for those members of the family who may want to spend some time out of the sun for a while, they can escape to the comfort of the cabana while the rest of the family enjoys the park.

#3 The Rides

Visit Schlitterbahn New Braunfels and you will be delighted to enjoy an eclectic group of rides including lazy rivers, slides, waterpark rollercoasters, tube chutes, and a gigantic Skycoaster that lets you fly over one hundred feet over the park!

We had a chance to explore both sides of Schlitterbahn, and both the east and west sides of the park had something fun for everyone to do.

On the west side of the park, the water on the rides is fed from the Comal River. One of our favorite rides from the west side is the Congo River Expedition. On the Congo River Expedition ride, you float along a mysterious river that has animatronics and fog machine effects as well as a fun drop towards the end of the ride. The west side also has the Raging River, which is a 45 minutes tubing adventure through the park. In addition to these rides, you will find even more slides, chutes, flumes, rivers, and pools (both heated and unheated) to enjoy before you make your way over the east side of the park. Hop on a complimentary tram ride to the west side of Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, and you will find many of the more modern and typical waterpark rides as well as the Skycoaster.

On the east side of Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, explore all three sections of this side of the park including Surfenburg, Tubenbach, and Blastenhoff. We had a fun-filled day exploring the east side, and we definitely had our favorite rides in each section of this side of the park.

Starting in Surfenburg, we had a blast learning how to boogie board at the Boogie Bahn! We took advantage of the early morning private lessons that they offer before the park is open to the general public. We also really enjoyed the Dragon's Revenge ride, which is a medieval-themed water coaster with fire, fog, and special lighting effects!

When you visit Tubenbach, make sure to stop by and check out The Falls! When we were walking around the park and asking locals which ride they loved the most in this section of the park, everyone had rave reviews about The Falls. I did not get a chance to ride The Falls, but I did learn that it is the world's longest waterpark ride! At this side of the park, you can brave the 3,600 foot-long whitewater river filled with raging rapids, large waves, and beautiful waterfalls when you ride The Falls.

Blastenhoff, my favorite part of the east side of Schlitterbahn, houses the Wolfpack, Master Blaster, Black Knight, The Torrent, and the Skycoaster. All of these thrill rides here at Blastenhoff are among some of the most popular attractions at Schlitterbahn New Braunfels (and serve as a good reason to think about investing in the Blast Pass, with the exception of the Skycoaster!) The rides here on this side of Blastenhoff emulate the most common kinds of high-thrill water slides and coasters you would look for at other waterparks. Without a doubt, enjoying the rides in Blastenhoff will serve up screams and giggles!

#4 The Blast Pass

If you are considering visiting Schlitterbahn on a weekend when it will be particularly busy, you can save yourself from having to wait in a bunch of long lines to get on the rides by investing in the Blast Pass.

What is great about the Blast Pass is it stands in line for you--simply scan your Blast Pass at one of the scanning spots throughout the park, choose which ride you'd like to "stand in line for," and your pass will reserve a spot in line for you and countdown how many minutes until you are the next person in line. If you are a fan of fast-paced, high thrills waterpark rides this would be a worthy investment of your time to keep you from spending all afternoon waiting in lines.

Enjoy a ride through the lazy river while the Blast Pass waits in line for you, and once your Blast Pass tells you that it is your turn to get on the ride, simply walk up to the ride you reserved and make your way to the front of the line with your very own Blast Pass entrance. You can learn more about Blast Pass here

#5 The Resort at Schlitterbahn

Wake up, roll out of bed, and walk a few minutes to enjoy a day of fun at Schlitterbahn when you stay at one of their many different types of overnight accommodations.

Planning a trip without the kids, or maybe you just want to enjoy a couples getaway? Indulge in a relaxing and luxe vacation with your spouse in one of their Treehaus Luxury Suites at Schlitterbahn New Braunfels.

Or, you can bring the whole family along and stay in one of the cabins at Resort at the Bahn. After a day at the park, come back to your accommodations and the fun doesn't stop there! You can enjoy lawn games, outdoor movie night, let the kids play on the Kindersteigen Play Structure, and sit back and enjoy some s'mores over the campfire before you start the fun all over again in the park the next day!

When you plan your trip out to Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, be sure to check their website for any stay and play deals or any other coupons or specials they are offering. Oftentimes, in their summer season, park admission may be included when you stay at their resort as well as early admission into the parks. For the most up-to-date information on any deals they are offering, you can visit their lodging site here

#6 The Skycoaster

Are you a thrill-seeker who also loves waterparks? Then a visit to Schlitterbahn New Braunfels is a must!

Fly through the sky above the waterpark, and experience this skydiving-meets-hang-gliding thrill ride first hand at Schlitterbahn New Braunfels! I had the chance to take flight myself, but after eating a few bites of funnel cake I thought it best to not take my chances--that said, If I had felt a little bit braver, I would have absolutely taken flight on the Skycoaster.

Flyers lay on their stomachs and are pulled backward and upwards into position from the top of the Skycoaster. Then, it's up to one rider to release the pulley that begins their free fall of 183 feet. Flying as fast as 80 miles per hour, riders get a small taste of what it is like to skydive on their initial drop, and then hang-glide forwards and backward over 100 feet above the park.

It is one of those rides that is over before you know it, but you can hold onto the memory forever and take advantage of the video footage that Schlitterbahn New Braunfels takes on every ride (those of us on our trip to Schlitterbahn who did the ride got both a video of themselves riding the Skycoaster, as well as a first-person perspective video shot of the actual freefall itself from one of the cameras on the swing).

#7 The Schlitterbahn New Braunfels Park is Unique!

If you needed a final reason to visit Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, simply put, it is a one-of-a-kind waterpark unlike any other you have ever seen!

It has been voted 'best waterpark' for over 20 years in a row, and it has the thrills and fun of any large theme park with a humble family history and the uniqueness of being a river-fed waterpark with the scenery and greenery to make one entire side of the park feel as if you never left the river at all.

There are two sides of the park--on the original side, Schlitterbahn West, all of the water for all of the rides comes in from the Comal River each day and then the park rides are emptied of water and fed back into the river. The natural feel of the west side at Schlitterbahn New Braunfels embodies the feeling of a living waterpark!

The family founders of Schlitterbahn enjoyed spending time at the river so much that they thought it would be a great idea to bring the fun of waterslides and tube shoots to the Comal River (and it was because of this that Schlitterbahn New Braunfels was created and is a wildly popular attraction in the San Antonio area since 1979).
