Exploring Cana Island Lighthouse (Baileys Harbor in Greater Door County, WI)

Last week, we made a trip out to Wisconsin to discover Door County for the first time. We spent the week exploring around the peninsula trying the best food in Door County, touring the various family farms and orchards, and learning about the deeply-rooted maritime history of the area and its significance through the first and second World Wars because of its rich shipbuilding history.

With such a sound maritime history, it only makes sense that Door County has numerous lighthouses around the peninsula that were constructed to aid ships coming inland from Lake Michigan and Green Bay. The peninsula is approximately 70 miles long, with 300 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline with 34 islands and 53 public beaches. Along the shoreline, there are 11 lighthouses and among them, the Cana Island Lighthouse is the most photographed for its traditional lighthouse style and the beautiful beach and waterfront that surrounds it.

To prepare for our day trip out to Cana Island, I made sure to pack up everything I would need for a day of walking around the island, climbing up the lighthouse staircase, and exploring the beach including my sunglasses, sunscreen, comfortable closed-toe walking shoes, a long-lasting antiperspirant deodorant, my camera, and a travel-size tripod. In order to make our way out to Cana Island, we made a 20 minutes drive from Ephraim. Then, we took a quick tractor ride across the shallow waters from the shore out to the island. After we reached Cana Island, it was just a quick 5 minutes walk to the other side until we reached the Cana Island Lighthouse.

Step inside the Cana Island Lighthouse and you can get an idea of what it may have been like to live as a lighthouse keeper over 100 years ago. Inside of the lighthouse, you will discover that it contains a two-story home, and each floor was meant for both of the lighthouse keepers and their families to live in while taking turns caring for the lighthouse. Now, each room is filled with maritime artifacts and information about what life was like for a keeper, what kinds of items you would find in their home at the time, as well as vintage lighthouse light bulbs and lenses.

Climb the 97 steps up the tight spiral staircase and you can get a great view from the top of the lighthouse while you make your way around the gallery deck. For those who want some great pictures and videos of Lake Michigan and the Door County peninsula, a climb up the lighthouse staircase is a must!

Before you finish exploring the Cana Island Lighthouse, kick off your shoes and dip your toes into the beautiful, clear waters along the beach and shoreline. The beauty of this Lake Michigan beach along Cana Island rivals the blue-green colors of the water you would find on a tropical island!

If you're looking for a great day trip in Door County, want to learn more about the maritime history of the area, explore a lighthouse, and enjoy a beautiful shoreline, be sure to add Cana Island to your travel bucket list!

Anytime I am headed outdoors and planning on being active, I always make sure to load up on antiperspirant deodorant at the start of my day so I can feel comfortable and clean all day long. Our trip out to Cana Island to see the lighthouse was no different, which is why I went to Walmart to pick up some UltraClear Black+White Dry Spray Antiperspirant Deodorant for this Wisconsin trip.

Degree Women's UltraClear Black+White Dry Spray Antiperspirant Deodorant goes on dry and stays on for up to 48 hours, and with its motion sense technology, it knew when I was climbing the stairs in the lighthouse that I was getting exercise (and it released a burst of extra protection as I kept moving and exploring the island). Since it also protects against yellow stains on clothes, I knew I could wear my white cactus shirt on the island all day long and not have to be disappointed with yellow armpit stains at the end of the day.

    1. You could most definitely spend a few days there and not get bored! They have a number of lighthouses you can see, and there are a handful of towns that make up the peninsula that have so much to do and see (and the food is so good!) I am planning on writing a blog post about the food there as well, and that should be up on the blog by the end of this week!
