Celebrating 1000 Blog Posts

8 years ago, I began this blog to document the wedding planning stages and hold a countdown for our wedding. I was in college at the time, and while I was busy with student teaching, I found it easy to do since I was also already familiar with how to blog since I had been blogging in middle school back in the days of Xanga and LiveJournal. For as long as I can remember having access to the Internet (and yes, I remember what it was like before we had access to dial-up Internet), I always enjoyed blogging and if you had told me when I was in middle school I would end up blogging as my job I would have never believed you. 1000 blog posts later, I'm still enjoying blogging. There are different reasons behind why I enjoy it, and while it does make me money now and has become my job, I still have an authentic and sincere love for it since I have been doing it for so long now it's become a part of my life.

Many bloggers come into blogging now with the expectations of monetizing their site or making money with blogging somehow. Back when I started, it was just a means to express myself and document tutorials and recipes to share with the friends that I'd made online.

When I started the Our Mini Family blog it was a simpler time--just after Pinterest was started and many of us began sharing our ideas from our blog onto Pinterest--and the idea of sharing what you create with others can easily be accessed from other search and inspiration board sites like Pinterest made it even more possible for more and more people to find this blog and continue to check back for more ideas. Waking up to receiving comments on my blog posts with people who found my DIY project or recipe idea from Pinterest was something that exhilarated me, and I've had the chance to connect with thousands and thousands of people across the world because of this blog. I enjoyed connecting with other creatives online who also had blogs, as well as connecting with the people who found Our Mini Family through using Pinterest and subscribing to our blog and following us on social media.

A few years later go by, and now the blog has gained a steady following. I'm chatting with some of my blogger friends online who are talking about being approached by advertising and marketing agencies asking them to feature a product in their post in exchange for money. Back then, it was a HUGE deal to get a sponsored blog post. I even remember our blogger group talking about the big news that fellow blogger Ree Drummond, better known as The Pioneer Woman, was getting an offer to do her own television show. It became a reality to us that blogging was becoming a way for many people to make some money, and for those lucky few, perhaps even a full-time job.

Even more years later, blogging continues to grow and even more people have started a blog. A handful of my friends were constantly getting sponsorship deals and while I was having a few offers, I was too preoccupied to read contracts and negotiate deals since I was trying to make my way up the ladder at Apple Inc. Working from home for Apple Inc allowed me the time to do DIY projects and develop recipes, but as the years went on, I became less and less enthralled with working for the company and more and more sponsored blogging offers ended up on the table. So, like anyone who was hating their job would do, I put more focus on the blog and for a while there I somehow ended up working 2 full-time jobs.

I kept up like this for long enough to realize it could potentially be a way for me to regularly make money, and once we realized this wasn't a fluke and I would keep having the opportunity to do sponsored campaigns for the blog, I left my job at Apple Inc after 3 years and began working as a freelancer.

Everyone else was horrified by the idea of leaving corporate America to do something as indefinite as blogging. Every single family member I talked to, the majority of our friends, and all of my former co-workers thought I was crazy to do it and that I would be begging for my job back at Apple Inc in a few weeks.

Well, it's been almost 5 years since I quit my job working for Apple Inc and I have no regrets about it. This blog has brought our family incredible opportunities and has given me a chance to regularly allow me to express myself, channel my creativity, and connect with so many people with similar interests online.

Blogging is more than a way to make money, though. It's about using your voice and your creativity to convey an idea or thought and broadcast it to anyone who will listen. It's about inspiring and educating others through your design, intention, and personal experiences. With every opportunity I am given to blog about something--whether it is sponsorship or not--I ask myself if it is something that others will find value in.

As a professional blogger, I take it upon myself to realize that thousands of people regularly read this blog. While there are many people who will contact us to tell us they enjoy following our journey and don't care what topics we write about on the Our Mini Family blog, I know there are thousands of others who regularly read this blog in hopes for an idea, suggestion, recommendation, or tutorial.

Moving forward, my hope is that we continue to inspire and bring ideas to those who read our blog.

I'm not sure if there will be another 1000 blog posts after this, but what I do know is that I have no intention to stop blogging any time soon and that I am incredibly thankful for the journey that it's brought us this far!

  1. Congrats! You've been at this thing for a while. I started blogging at the end of 2012 as a place to share my recipes and party tips with my friends. I had no idea at the time that I could actually make money doing what I love. Now, 1400 posts later, I still love it.
