How to Have an Arizona Family Staycation in 2020

If you are not ready to board a plane to take a family vacation just yet, don't forget that you may have an option closer to home. This year, we had our Arizona summer vacation at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch.

These are strange times, and having to adjust to new precautions to protect ourselves and others is necessary. But also, very very exhausting. Normally, Adam and I regularly travel, go on road trips, and choose to take staycations fairly often. But 2020 has drastically changed that.

Back in March, we put ourselves in self-quarantine, canceled all of our flights, canceled a cruise, and canceled hotel confirmations. We basically did all but cancel 2020 altogether.

All the while, we have been practicing social distancing and staying safe. Businesses and hotels have opened back up and are enforcing safety precautions, and after doing some research and figuring out which hotels had the best plans to tackle and execute COVID-19 safety measures, we decided to have an Arizona summer staycation.

We have stayed at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch in the past, so this was not our first visit. There were specific reasons why we opted to stay here instead of other hotels. For one, many resorts and hotels here in the valley have closed down their on-property restaurants and room service. Also, we like the fact that they have taken clear and conscious precautions to provide safety to their hotel guests and employees.

The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch is "AZSafe + Clean" hotel guidance certified and they have put into action numerous precautions and safety procedures to ensure cleanliness for guests. If you want to read all about the HYATT standards and their cleanliness and safety protocols, you can read all about that here
Pro Tip: The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch allows dogs, so you can bring your fur baby along with you for your staycation! Their resort is very dog-friendly, and Bowie has enjoyed staying here with us and the employees are all very kind and welcoming when you bring your dog with you. Bowie was treated like a super star during our stay!
From the moment we entered the lobby, we could tell that our research was spot on and it was evident they were doing a good job enforcing guests to practice social distancing and wearing masks.

Their valet parking was not in effect, so we were able to self-park in their valet, covered parking garage. There were numerous signs around the resort that stated how wearing face coverings is required and how guests must practice social distancing by staying 6 feet apart and not gathering in large groups. Another precaution that was on a sign we noticed was how they were limited housekeeping and daily room cleanings and it was by request only (in order to limit the interaction between guests and employees).

I also liked seeing that in the lobby where you check-in, there were sneeze guards built between the front desk and the check-in area. There were also signs on the floor reminding guests to stand 6 feet apart.

Restrictions we saw during our stay in the restaurant and bar area included reserving every other (and sometimes two) tables and chairs to ensure enough space between guests. When we entered the pool area, we also saw there was a big sign with lots of information on it about the State of Arizona executive order and guidelines for guests entering the pool area.

If you plan on spending your day at the pool, which is what we did, we recommend reserving one of their cabanas. They are all-day cabana rentals, and they come with plenty of space to keep you far away from other guests so you can continue to practice social distancing.
Pro Tip: If you do end up renting one of their all-day cabanas, be sure to check-in for your cabana with the lobby before 1pm. Otherwise, if you don't use your cabana prior to then, they may assume you are a no-show.
Our cabana had an outlet, a television, a personal refrigerator, and wifi. Having a spot to sit in the shade at the pool that's reserved just for us is ideal, and what's even better about their cabana rentals is that it comes with a $40 food and beverage credit for their poolside Twisted Vine Pool Bar & Grill.

The food and cocktails at Twisted Vine Pool Bar & Grill are exceptional!

We decided we did not want to go off of the property during our staycation, so we ate all of our meals at the resort. Out of everything we tried, our favorite cocktails were the Saguaro Sunset and the Prickly Pear Refresher. The Saguaro Sunset is great if you enjoy rum cocktails and like the traditional 'rum runner' drink, and their Prickly Pear Refresher is a must-try if you enjoy tequila cocktails with a little bit of a pucker.

Be sure to try their chicken fingers! Trust us! You may think they are just a kid-friendly menu item, which they definitely are, but their chicken fingers are breaded and cooked to perfection, and our favorite bite we had to eat from their limited menu at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch.

If you are looking for a place to take a vacation right here in Phoenix, you can take advantage of the summer discounts they are are still available.

    1. Absolutely! I love being a 'tourist' in our own city. It's great to escape from our regular neighborhood and what we see everyday, and just relax and enjoy what people get to do and see when they fly in to Phoenix to vacation here.
